Sir Adolphus William Ward (1837-1924), historian, was born at Hampstead, Middlesex, on 2 December 1837. He was educated in Germany and Bury St Edmunds before entering Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1855 (B.A., 1859; M.A., 1862), where he became a Fellow in 1862. He entered the Inner Temple in 1860, and was called to the bar in 1866, but never practised law. John Emerich Edward Charles Dalberg Acton, 1st Baron Acton (1834-1902), was born in Naples on 10 January 1834, the son of Sir Ferdinand Richard Acton, 7th Baronet.
